That Crucial Stage In Adulthood

That Crucial Stage In Adulthood

The girl sitting next to me at the bookstore is wearing a ruby sapphire engagement ring; silver band, dotted with almost microbial diamonds. It’s an interesting choice in centerpiece but simple, very modest. She’s a small girl, in a way that makes it difficult to refer to her as a young woman. She’s wearing a dark teal hooded sweater and plain blue jeans. She’s rather thin. On her face is the expression of an isolationist upbringing; the corners of her eyes leave no trace of exhaustion, no wrinkles, no evidence of a long history of smiles. Although stoic, her lips create the preamble to a frown. She’s not reading the cookbook in front of her, she’s just turning the pages, staring at the pictures. It’s clear that she’s not reading the pages given that when she turns a page, she lands her long fingers over the lines of text in a way that shows she hasn’t paid attention to the content of them, it’s EB Garamond font or the way the page is headed with large bright red typeface, bolding the words ‘Soba.’ She’s reading about noodles.

It’s almost adorable seeing her pale skin and freckled fingers covering the text of the pages, simply because of the shining symbol on her finger. She’s at a special stage in adulthood, an elementary stage in which she begins to scrutinize everything around her, and at the same time creates budding walls and barricades to stave off dissent. She has that undoubted perception that there is nothing she doesn’t know. It’s only a few minutes later when she’s joined by her boyfriend; a young boy of the same complexion and similar likeness. It appears that they had made their lives small. They appear as children protecting each other from adulthood, from countless possibilities and endless threats of reality. It’s cute. They seem content in confinement, not complicating what they already know.

They look happy.
